SUMMARY:Henry Kapono: A Tribute to Don Ho at Blue Note Hawaii
DESCRIPTION:Watch live and on-demand for one full week following the performance. \nPresented with support from Outrigger Hotels & Resorts and Hawaiian 105 \nThis 2021 special edition is in partnership with the Henry Kapono Foundation and dedicated to helping get Hawai`i’s musicians back to work and on stage to do what they love most…perform. \nApril 29th brings us a special tribute show to the one and only Don Ho. \nABOUT HENRY KAPONO’S ARTIST 2 ARTIST SERIES\nThe launch of this new format will continue to feature multiple award-winning and GRAMMY® nominee\, Henry Kapono\, who will introduce a new opening segment that will spotlight many of Hawai`i’s diverse and talented musical entertainers\, followed by some of Hawai`i’s most iconic musicians. A favorite son of Hawai`i\, he brought people together with his charismatic personality\, Hawaiian values\, and music. Don Ho is Hawai`i’s icon and a personification of the Aloha Spirit. He was big time\, but to Don\, it “ain’t no big thing.” \nHis legacy of performing spanned over five decades (1960-2007) of entertaining audiences\, appearing on every major talk show\, being a Las Vegas headliner\, starring in his own ABC-TV show and specials\, to headlining Waikiki’s most popular and longest running show\, providing a showcase for young\, local talent\, and inspiring them to reach for greatness. \nWith over 15 best-selling recordings and featuring songs by local composers\, there was so much more to Don Ho than “Tiny Bubbles” and “Pearly Shells.” Don’s music was the cornerstone on which he built his extraordinary entertainment career. It is the language through which he spoke from his heart to the world. Whether a lifelong friend\, an aspiring performer looking for a break\, a grandmother from Peoria\, or a member of the military\, you mattered to Don Ho. In a one-on-one encounter or appearance before hundreds on his stage\, he made you feel special in his genuine “local boy” style. \n~Courtesy of the Donald Tai Loy Ho Trust. \nABOUT HENRY KAPONO\nNative Hawaiian and GRAMMY® nominated\, Henry Kapono is a multiple award-winning vocalist\, guitarist\, songwriter and composer. SUMMARY:Lei Day Celebration: Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:Be part of the effort to make the world’s largest lei… unofficially\nNā Lei Koa\, Warrior Lei\, theme continues to honor our frontline workers for 2021 Lei Day\nO‘AHU – May Day is Lei Day in Hawai‘i\, but do you know that the World Record for the longest fresh flower lei belongs to India? No way! Time to reclaim that title… unofficially. \nIn lieu of a more traditional Lei Day Celebration\, the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) encourages everyone to continue making lei and showing their aloha for one another by supporting the pandemic-modified Lei Day theme of “Nā Lei Koa” or Warrior Lei. \nThis theme was developed to show appreciation for the frontline workers who continue to work hard to keep us safe as we battle COVID-19. To continue the best practices of limiting physical interactions\, we are encouraging everyone to make a lei using whatever material is available and display it in a prominent location on your property. Make sure it is firmly secured and doesn’t create any safety issues. \nAfter you display the lei take a picture of your lovely creation\, post it to social media using the hashtag #leidaycelebration2021 (Instagram\, Facebook\, and Twitter) and make sure to include how long your lei is (without the ties). Then we will tally up all of the lei made and see if together they can virtually beat the 3.11-mile World Record! More importantly\, these lei of aloha serve as a tribute to the victims of COVID-19 and their families. \nIn 2008\, DPR and Hawai‘i established the Guinness World Record for the longest fresh floral/greenery lei at one-mile long. A year later that title was claimed by San Pedro Laguna\, Philippines with a 1.3-mile lei. The current world record stands at 3.11 miles long as established in Chennai\, India in 2012. \nIn addition to this effort\, DPR will also be broadcasting a first-ever presentation of the 2021 Lei Court Investiture\, filled with the ceremony\, hula\, and festivities you would normally see at the Kapi‘olani Park Bandstand on Lei Day. The presentation will be available on our DPR social media platforms. \nLooking for another way to celebrate Lei Day? Our Booth Complex is organizing a community effort to create a lei long enough to surround the entire district park. That’s over 1\,600 feet of lei! Those interested should visit https://bit.ly/3r1QHQD for more information and to sign-up. \nInterested in learning to make lei? We have several virtual learning opportunities available from park and botanical garden staff from around the island! Visit our online registration website pros.hnl.info and click on the “Activities” section. Type in “lei” to the search box at the top of that page to see what’s available. That way you can keep practicing your craft and stay sharp when we hopefully return to an in-person Lei Day Celebration and Lei Contest for 2022.

SUMMARY:Kimié Miner’s Birthday Celebration at the Blue Note Hawaii
DESCRIPTION:KIMIE MINER is a Native Hawaiian mother of three and a full-time GRAMMY-nominated producer\, singer-songwriter\, and recording artist. She is the President and CEO of HAKU COLLECTIVE\, a full-service\, multi-media talent production and management group that she founded in Honolulu\, Hawaiʻi. She has written and co-produced 5 award-winning albums including the GRAMMY-nominated album\, “Hawaiian Lullaby\,” and most recently produced “Children of the Sea – Nā Kama Kai” a full-length album from her free music mentorship program called MeleCraft\, dedicated to supporting aspiring young artists and honoring the Hawaiian culture and language. In 2018\, she won Female Vocalist of the Year and Song of the Year for her song “Bamboo” (Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards) and Female Artist of the Year at the Island Music Awards. \nKimié’s parents\, who are of Hawaiian and Portuguese descent\, noticed her affinity for music at a very young age\, and at 14-years-old she taught herself to play guitar and began writing her own original songs. While attending Kamehameha Schools as a boarding student on Oʻahu\, she honed in on her songwriting. She found inspiration in a wide range of music from Hawaiian\, Jazz and R&B-influenced individuals such as Israel Kamakawiwo’ole\, India.Arie\, Lauryn Hill\, and Eva Cassidy. While an undergraduate at the University of San Diego\, Kimié embarked on her first west coast American tour at age 19 with reggae star Barrington Levy. Following the tour Miner resided in Clarendon\, Jamaica for a few months to write and work with Levy in the studio. Her songs regularly evoke the Hawaiian concept of the Piko: the “naval” or “center” which represents a home base to which one can always return. She notes that “As Hawaiians\, we have our roots and our routes. We know who we are\, and we take that knowledge with us when we navigate and explore the rest of the world.” \nAwarded the 21st HVCA Entrepreneur “Island Innovator Award” Miner founded Mele in Hawai‘i\, Hawai‘i’s first and longest-running multi-home\, live-stream entertainment series since the Covid-pandemic began\, supporting over 50 artists while reaching a global audience with the Hawaiian language and the most progressive sounds of Hawaiʻi. \nAs a two-year term Team Captain for Hawai’i on District Advocate Day\, Miner also serves on the Board of Governors for the Hawaiʻi Academy of Recording Arts (HARA) and the Recording Academyʻs Pacific NorthWest Chapter. She is an active mentor for ‘GRAMMY U’ and an engaged member of both the education and P&E committees for the PNW Chapter. \n“I am a Native daughter. Descended from the water. A creative mother\, reflecting a light to empower and change the world.” -Kimié Miner
