I used to be a Waikiki rat during the summers; my sister and I would go stay with my Grandparents who were a part of the Waikiki lifestyle for years and years. My Grandmother would watch us, my Grandfather would be a cook at the Swiss House. There I would roam the beach, sit and watch so many people walking by, get lost at the International Market Place and be on Checkers and Pogo twice.
This past Saturday I was at the International Market Place and almost got lost again. I hadnʻt been there in so long, I forgot what the place looked like. All I knew was that it had a food court, and there were kiosks all over the place with people selling stuff in Waikiki that was made in China, Taiwan or Hong Kong. What I FOUND was something completely different.
What a wonderful evening; I went to "Return to Waikiki" starring Makana at the International Market Place in a new outdoor venue. The servers and drinkservers were wonderful filled with energy and aloha. The food was awesome....awesome luau food; all the local people were happy. The pre-show entertainment was old hawaiian music that was especially enjoyable since I was sitting with Bill Tapia who was giving me the background of alot of the music. The show was throughly enjoyable. Just enough humor. Just enough history and music. Just enough dance. Just enough of all the right stuff to make you want more. I wanted to stay for the cocktail show, but couldnʻt. (My wife was coming home after being away for 2 weeks and I had to clean house before she came home). I will go back again. Nice use of multimedia as well.
Nice to see a show in Waikiki that could go the distance. Makana is a master of the stage as soon as he steps on it and commands attention. He continues to soar.
